Serena Williams handily beat her first opponent, Russian Anastasia Potapova, in the first round of the Australian Open, but it was her status as good friends with Meghan Markle that reporters were curious about after her match.
“Your good friend, Meghan Markle, who attended your last two slams, and Harry, have taken a move, a stance that many people think is extraordinary and historic. What are your feelings about that? Have you spoken to her?” a reporter asked Serena after her match in a transcript posted by New York Times reporter Ben Rothenberg.
Serena responded, “Yeah. I have absolutely no comments on anything with that. But good try. You tried. You did good.”
If you don’t know, Serena and Meghan go way back and Serena actually hosted Meghan‘s baby shower last year! In fact, it looks like Duchess Kate Middleton understood just how good of friends the pair were when this happened last year.
