Atlanta Business Journal is proud to announce the 2020 Winner of the Atlanta’s Best Bakery Contest as Sammy Cheezecake. ABJ’s editorial team and judges did extensive research, viewed countless ratings and even did an in-person taste-test. Sammy Cheezecake topped the list with their popular cheesecakes, baked cakes and cupcakes.
Owner and Head Pastry Chef Samuel “Sammy” Harry Smith, Jr. is one of the best kept secrets in Metro-Atlanta, but not for long. The bakery has significant social media buzz with rave compliments from customers saying, “Fresh every time it’s never a disappointment” to “ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! You will definitely enjoy every single bite.”
Chef Sammy’s original plan when he started culinary school was to become the next Chef Emeril, then one day his assignment was to make a cheesecake in class. I asked him about that day.
Question: On that day in class, how did your cheesecake turn out?
Chef Sammy: It was the best cheesecake I’ve ever had!
Question: The one You made?
Chef Sammy: “Yeah!”
After eating a bite of Sammy’s prized cheesecake, I can honestly say it was the best I’ve ever had. Chef Sammy’s traditional New York Style Cheesecake changed one customer’s mind who said, “I’m not a lover of cheesecake; HOWEVER SAMMY’S has changed my whole perception.”
In 2005 while still a student at Le Cordon Blue, Chef Sammy “was out in the streets” selling cheesecakes from the back of his 2002 Tahoe for $3 a slice. He knew he had something special after six weeks when he started making more money on Saturdays than he did in two weeks working his job at the Hilton Hotel. Established in 2009, with guidance from his mentors, S.Truitt Cathy (Founder of Chik-fill-A) and Chef Todd Kazenske (Executive Chef at Le Cordon Bleu), who introduced him to the world of pastries, he launched Sammy Cheezecake. On opening day, he was the only employee, now he has a dedicated, close knit team of fourteen. One online review noted his staff by saying, “The staff at Sammy’s is amazing from the time we entered, to the time we left, we left we felt welcomed.”
I asked Chef Sammy about the secret to his success ,he said “If you’re passionate about what you do it doesn’t matter your address, people will come and pay your price.” He plans to develop the world’s largest bakery, delivering cakes all over Georgia with the goal to become the “Amazon of Cakes” and deliver nationally within 24 hours of placing the order, which might work out well, seeing that he has plenty of great reviews coming from states as far away as California.
Along with his traditional cheesecake, Sammy offers Oreo Cheesecake with an Oreo crust, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cake with a handmade cream cheese icing, Strawberry Lemonade Cake with a handmade cream cheese icing, and White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake with a peanut butter buttercream icing. These dishes are moist, delectable and sought out by everyone from celebrities to construction workers. Sammy has kept his pricing affordable for customers, with slices costing only $7 and caters both small and large events.
I spoke with one customer from New York who said, “I think this cheesecake is better than Junior’s Cheesecake in Brooklyn.”
“I had to do it slow. I had to have patience to get it just right”, said Sammy. www.SammyCheezeCake.com
