Lockheed Martin Corp. said Jan. 13 it has been awarded a $3 billion-plus order from the U.S. government for 50 C-130J transport planes built at the company’s Marietta, Ga., plant.

Bethesday, Md.-based Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) said the Department of Defense awarded more than $1.5 billion in funding for the first 21 C-130J aircraft on the multiyear award. The award provides Super Hercules aircraft to the U.S. Air Force (24 HC/MC-130Js), Marine Corps (20 KC-130Js) and Coast Guard (options for six HC-130Js).

Aircraft purchased through the award will be delivered between 2021 and 2025.

Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 400 C-130J aircraft in 11 variations to customers. The company delivered 25 C-130J aircraft in 2018, including two to international customers. The company had 78 aircraft in its backlog at the end of 2018 with advanced funding from customers for additional C-130J aircraft not currently in the company’s backlog. The company said in early 2019 that its C-130J backlog extends into 2022.

Aerospace products are Georgia’s No. 1 export and the state’s second largest manufacturing industry, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development. PwC in 2019 ranked Georgia as the No. 2 state for “aerospace attractiveness.”

Atlanta Business Chronicle ranks Lockheed Martin as Georgia’s No. 4 manufacturer and metro Atlanta’s No. 23 employer, with about 5,000 employees.
