This past Saturday, October 26th, the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta celebrated the most successful year of their highly anticipated annual 5k fundraiser, the Race for Rest. This lively event hosted by Monday Night Brewing at their Garage location raises money for the Furniture Bank’s mission to create stability for families and individuals in need by distributing donated furniture to turn their houses into homes.
For the 6th year of the event, the Race for Rest had 582 runners and brought in more than $41,000 for the Furniture Bank, a significant increase from previous years. In addition to the 5k itself, this year included a large after-party inside the brewery where race participants received a free beer and bloody mary and could enjoy live music and games. Winners from each age group, team, and overall time received commemorative pint glasses at the awards ceremony after the race.
With the money raised from this event, the Furniture Bank can provide 652 twin beds to children, fully furnish 100 houses, or give 357 forklift certification scholarships to previously homeless veterans through their Veterans’ Employment Program.
“We are honored so many runners came out on Saturday to support the Furniture Bank. We rely on a successful race to ensure we can help all our clients that depend on us each year. This was our largest race to date and we hope it will only continue to grow,” commented Megan Anderson, the Executive Director of FBMA. As a nonprofit, the Furniture Bank is dependent on donations, fundraising, and grants to continue operations and their work in the community.
The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta is a local nonprofit in the West End committed to making a house a home for more than 5,000 clients every year. Since 1988, the Furniture Bank has been recycling gently-used furniture by collecting it from the community and giving it to individuals and families moving out of homelessness and fleeing domestic violence, as well as countless others struggling to make ends meet.
